The router / switch / NAT features of the small box works just like other Linksys products in this series – and just like that. What is new is support for IPSec VPN. You can create secure tunnels over the Internet between two or more LANs use one of these boxes in front of each LAN. Alternatively (or addition) can create a tunnel between a remote computer and a separate network that has one of these routers * IF * the remote PC support IPSec. Windows 2000 and XP are compatible with IPSec, but Windows 9x/Me/NT * NO *. (If you want a Windows PC 9x/Me/NT connect to an IPSec VPN, IPSec is the driver required 3rd party, or just buy one of these boxes to put in front of your computer.)
IPsec Configuration Windows 2000 or XP computer is not exactly easy either – Linksys booklet is sixteen pages! But the difficulty is not wrong Linksys – It is rather because of the graphical user interface in Microsoft tortured for configuring IPSec.
But to create a tunnel between two of these boxes is easy. It’s only for PC-to-LAN tunnel is poor.
want to give this product 5 stars. It works very well and the price is almost too good to be true – compare very well with other products costing 5-10 times more. But I have to take a point off because Linksys does not give sufficient weight to the limitation of Windows 2000/XP VPN Client PC in your marketing copy, and there’s no word on how to set up independent customer in the manual that comes with the router – you need look at the Linksys website. From what I see on the forums, there are many people who are lost without better information on these points. So if you plan to use a separate VPN client, be prepared for a struggle, but hang in there – it works!

I bought a pair of Linksys BEFVP41 units to connect two office networks and provide secure access to remote networks through VPN for mobile users. While the units performed last job, left the latter much to be desired.
should have known better when presented with confusing marketing information from Linksys. In one breath (your website) which says: “No IPSec VPN Client software is needed,” while another says: “Mobile workers can also connect to a corporate network using an IPSec VPN client software through the solution.” As usual, there is a gap between marketing and easy twist of reality.
PC-to-box connections, such as those with mobile users, is it true that you do not need any special client software. Windows 2000 and XP, actually connect to the BEFVP41 without special software, but only if your computer has a static IP address. Neither the local network or on a coffee, it is unlikely that the typical desktop user will have a static IP address, which translated means that in reality the VPN client software needed to make these devices useful in the remote access network.
is because BEFVP41 only supports IPSec. Commonly used in Windows-based VPN using PPTP or L2TP, which are both based on Windows. But this unit (and most others) do not support PPTP or L2TP.
Back to the requirement, then the IPSec VPN Software Market. The software is not cheap, and increase substantially the total cost of this solution from Linksys. I tested the IPSec Client TheGreenBow the French company, and it works. The problem is that there is no DHCP server or other types of dynamic routing or DNS support is simply a “raw” network pipe. For most mobile users, this will be the most functional, and this is especially true for users of the network that uses Windows Active Directory. (Perhaps the recommended solution, VPN client, Soft Remote, directions, but either way, is an expensive addition).
All this left me looking for ways to get PPTP support without buying hardware. The general proposal was to simply configure a Windows server behind the firewall to offer PPTP and configure the Linksys BEFVP41 pass PPTP. In short, it does not work.
website from Linksys is a technical note on how to configure this scenario also. But there was someone at Linksys actually tested the note, we would have discovered that it does not work. Technical note proposes port mapping ports 1723 (PPTP) and 47 (presumably to GRE, a protocol required for PPTP to work). The problem is that “47″ is not a port number is the number of GRE protocol. 47, the allocation of ports in the firewall has absolutely no effect on AS GRE protocol. Who said a technical note clearly has little understanding of the topic.
Some firewalls Linksys works with PPTP pass-through, but apparently not BEFVP41. The evidence suggests that the GRE protocol is not properly managed internally to support pass-through scenarios. The connection can be made on port 1723 on a server behind the firewall in Windows when it passes through the Linksys, but without good management GRE, VPN connection can not actually be fixed.
When you add all of this a very clumsy web management interface, the Linksys BEFVP41 a dead end for me. Both devices are on the way back to Amazon. com, as I write this review. After previous experience with the company where they took forever to update drivers to fix a compatibility problem after seeing technically incorrect technical notes on its website support, and after the addition of this experience, I think twice Linksys worry about something new.
alternates are selected for BEFVP41 (a pair of Cyber Guard / Snapgear SG300 units) have already arrived and has proved much more flexible, adaptable and more powerful than the BEFVP41. Together with the configuration, SG300S PPTP and L2TP provide direct support (in addition to IPSec), which provides a total solution which (unlike the BEFVP41) does not really require any special software to offer customers a mobile office to office and office networking solutions.

I have 30 of these units to a client that connects to our head office to sell a service through the VPN tunnel encryption. Easy to install, plugs into any standard VPN box, remotely manageable, good performance and price is definitely the best there is. Join the SonicWALL, and you must purchase licenses for each function you want. No license to Linksys. To the guy who complained about the port forwarding and port triggering, which is probably doing something wrong, because I have both port forwarding and port enabled on my boxes and make more than one direction. It helps if people read the instructions. The port forwarding information, see the help file on the router.
Port Triggering
Some Internet applications or games that use alternative ports for communication between the server and the host LAN. If you want to use these programs, find the ports used by them and fill the shot (output), port and incoming port switches in this table. The router will forward the packet to the LAN host
“
So if you want to configure a VPN tunnel and use a program I wanted to go through port 5000, outbound and inbound on the Linksys VPN router in another, that’s what the purpose is. Highly recommended

I’ve been lookiing of a solid solution, cheap VPN for a while so I was glad to find this router bits. I had no problem to set the device to connect to a WatchGuard Firebox II and Nortel Networks Contivity 100S, both of which live in my equipment rack in the office. VPN configuration can be frustrating if you are not familiar with the technology, but the product has a very simple interface and little time devoted to education about IPSec facilitate installation.
Highly recommended.

Linksys VPN Router gives the best results when used one at each end, up to 40 tunnels. It took me 20 minutes to configure the router and make a permanent VPN connection. I got a bad router. Each router must have exactly the same configuration (this is what makes a VPN). In one installation of the router, I could not get a VPN connection. After checking the logs, I found that there was a Crypto Sub-system defects in the device is not working properly. I returned the defective unit and was good. With a VPN set up correctly, there is no reason for the transfer of intellectual property rights or the implementation of the demilitarized zone. Domain controller from Microsoft, a Unix server, a frame, 40 computers, print servers and more are working together as if they were in the same office. Linksys did a good job with this device. If you have problems, it is probably your setup. After all, the VPN is a rigid security implementation.
