Great little product. I practically destroyed the default installation and installed Ubuntu on this server to use as a home server / external server for various projects I work on. It is more than sufficient for this purpose. Also works great as a server for Internet radio, and as a benchmark for the SOCKS firewall (for example, bypass firewall at work). From my experience, it does not seem to have enough power to stream video from sites like Hulu and display (but you can listen through it to another computer just fine), and it is not in a position ‘listen to Pandora (mainly because Flash Player uses Pandora a ridiculous amount of system resources). I have not really used for locally stored media server, but I suspect it would work a little better. If you really want to sit at a screen and use it, you’ll be amazed by the speed by any means, but it is adequate for simple tasks (simple web browsing, document editing, etc..). His love is absolutely silent, and literally peak consumption to 7 watts of power, even under heavy load * * (compiled code).

I I read many reviews on other sites which is comparable to systems like EeeBox and note that it is underpowered. I think it’s absolutely true, depending on what you want to use. * REAL * The benefit of this system, in my view, is that you always gives a great computer for a home server without head or simple tasks online for less energy than your computer uses regularly when it is probably completely off. Systems like the EeeBox by cons, use about as much power a laptop, which is not huge by any means, but is not anything special.
< ; br /> So, in summary, if you want a small machine, you can leave running in the corner for home automation, the host server, or write simple documents or fast web browsing type of tasks that does no noise at all and uses almost no power, this may be good for you. However, if you want to do something that is even remotely CPU intensive (like the display * * streaming video rather than serving as a pass-through for data or a storage point for data) then you probably should consider something more powerful.

Note, as of this writing, only the wireless Windows XP NIC Driver allows you to run this unit as an access point wireless. I’m sure the Linux side is working on it.

I use it to manage my webcam, weather data, and upload both to remote servers.

It came with a good selection of packages installed. I use it headless and it operates with very low power consumption. That’s all that matters to me.

I may enter and remove some packages that I installed does not free up more disk space.

I put up with a static IP on my home network. Do not bother with the packet network installed. Readup on ifconfig and edit the file / etc / network / interfaces file directly.

This is the ideal machine to use for server type applications, I. e. mail, http, PBX, etc.

Let me describe my setup. I’m using Elastix, PBX is a Linux distribution based on Asterisk + FreePBX in a SOHO environment, 8 extensions, 1 Telco as the line, and 2 VoIP termination providers. It works great and I think this is underusing. Processor has been below 10%. It has replaced my “old” PBX running on a Linksys wrt45gs router (which has served its purpose but I had to have a very lean install asterisk, there was no way to install FreePBX and all PreReqs with 8 MB flash, 32MB ram)

    Advantages:
    – silent.
    – low power.
    – x86. Many options that you can run on it.

    Disadvantages:
    – None so far.

; Warning: Geode LX800 processor is an i586 instruction set (in fact, has all the instructions i686 least a couple) and this means that some Linux distributions (like CentOS) May Fail to Install in it without tweaking. ” br />

I bought this mainly for developing Ruby / Rails applications, running headless. I use putty to ssh into the box from my Windows desktop.

To run it headless, you must first connect to the box via the GUI and install OpenSSH. Once it’s installed, you can reboot and unplug the monitor and keyboard. To save memory I disabled automatic startup of the GUI (gdm and X).

It has been a while since I could run Linux at home, Ubuntu was a nice surprise so far, everything I installed worked perfectly. Configuring Samba is a breeze, as was the ruby and rails installation.

The 60GB drive is partitioned 20/40 Gentoo and Ubuntu, respectively. I’m trying now to work on how to merge the disk space safely Gentoo in the Ubuntu partition (I am not well informed about GRUB), but in the meantime, 40Gb is more than enough.

The only possible drawback I’ve seen so far is that the case gets hot – an obvious side effect of the fanless design. I am a little worried that the temperature inside the case will shorten the lifespan of components, but I have no evidence of this yet.

I received my unit based on Linux and the wireless card is not present. After rebooting several times, he suddenly appeared and I was able to get the names of several local access points wireless (including mine). I was unable to connect to any of them, and the link quality has remained at 0 / 100. After a few days trying to configure wireless, wireless card disappeared again.

On the positive side, the customer service has responded to my message forum in a day and the construction quality of the machine is obviously excellent. I’ll try to buy again.
