See if the company sends you to the course. Learning Tree is a great place to learn a lot in a short time. (This is not cheap, but some companies understand that educated employee is a valuable asset.) They have courses on Linux, databases (my wife is starting to take a series of courses on this point, even if She teaches Word and Excel) and web-related things (I’m taking a class soon Ajax).

What I did was went and bought a pizza box (server) and was in a local data center. It was a Cobalt RAQ – I did not know better at the time but I did cut my teeth on it. (I always have too.) After a few years when the software for the IAS became obsolete, I brought the box home and rented a dedicated server and dedicated servers ran on mine. It’s really the best way to learn.

My suggestion is as follows: (1) Install a Linux operating system (Fedora, for example, CentOS, Ubuntu) on your desktop or laptop, learn Linux admin skills. Most hosting companies use CentOS. (2) Install those hosting software used by hosting companies (eg, firewalls, virtualization software, apache, php, etc..) And learn to use and configure these logiciels.Bonne luck!
